Esther Jurott - rest in peace

Esther Jurott

We received word from Lester Jurott, son of Graham and Esther Jurott to advise that Esther passed away Monday 6 August 2018 at her nursing home.

Lester said Esther “passed peacefully in her aged care facility. She had advanced Dementia and I think her soul can now join Dad's.  Mum was in excellent care by the Staff at Janolma centre, and I thank them for their work.”

It was only in October 2017 last year that Graham passed away. Both Graham and Esther were Life Members of the club and will be missed.  Esther joined the club soon after it started and they were married in 1954.

Here is a photo of Graham and Esther in happier times heading off on their honeymoon in 1954.  A classic shot reflecting their love of photographer, bikes and the great outdoors.  The bike is a Jawa 350 twin 2 stroke made in Czechoslovakia. Lester advises that they rode that bike to Melbourne and back, at a time when motorcycle apparel wasn't what it is today and the highway definitely wasn't what it is today!

Our condolences go to Lester Jurott, his partner Janelle Tebbutt, the extended Jurott family and friends.  The funeral will be held on Friday 17th August at Mt Thompson Crematorium (East Chapel) at 10:30AM and following the funeral at Holland Park Hotel.

New Features: Photo Albums, Trip Reports, Traces, Locations

Posted by Shaun Johnston on Saturday, 20th of May, 2017

Hi BBWers

Some may have noticed that the website was not available for a few hours today.  This is because we've been adding some new features to make a more vibrant on-line community.

What are the new features?

We've added Photo Albums, GPX Traces, Trip Reports, and Locations.  We have also added a Discussion facility which should make communication between club members easier.

Photo Albums

Photo Albums are pretty self explanatory.  They are photos from activities.  Members can upload photos after they complete an activity.  NOTE - at the moment, photo upload is quite slow.  Please be patient when uploading.  We are working to resolve this issue.

GPX Traces

GPX Traces are traces recorded with a GPS Handset or other GPS-capable device.  Leaders can now upload their traces to share with other leaders.  The website provides visualisation of the route recorded by the GPX, over a topographic map supplied by OpenStreetMaps.

Trip Reports

Leaders may now add Trip Reports to their completed activities.  Over time, the repository of Trip Reports submitted by leaders will become a very valuable resource.

How do I Post?

If you visit an activity that you have completed, you will see some new options.  If you are a leader, you will see this:

New Post Options

If you're not a leader, you will be able to post Photo Albums, but will only be able to view Trip Reports, and will not be able to post or view GPX Traces.

How Do I View?

If an activity already has content posted, you will see something similar to this

Activity Content

There are four new sections.  Photos, Trip Reports, GPX Traces and Discussions.  GPX Traces are only visible to leaders, while Discussion visibility is set by the leaders of the activity.

Locations: Tying It All Together

All Activities have at least one location - the destination.  Often they have a second - the meeting point.  We have taken these locations, and created dedicated pages for them.

Here is an example - Mount Cougal.  You can view a brief description, a map showing where The Cougals are, and a complete history of activities that have gone there.  In addition, each Location will display photos, traces (only to leaders) and trip reports for all activities that have gone there.  This makes Location pages a hub of information about locations that BBW visits.

At the moment, we only provide a small list of location pages, listed here:  This list is small, because we are defining a list of Standard Locations, which will be added to over time.  Leaders will still be able to use and type any location they like when they add an Activity, but only standard locations will be linked from an activity to a dedicated Locations page.

Please bear with us while we pad out the Standard Location list.  It will not take too long!

We hope you enjoy these new features.

Do you have any questions?  If so, please feel free to email myself (Shaun) at or Julie, our Technology Officer, at  Your feedback is valuable!

Car Pooling Information is Back

Posted by Shaun Johnston on Sunday, 19th of March, 2017

What is this "Car Pooling Information" malarkey?

Club members may recall that in the Brisbane Bushwalkers website's previous incarnation, they were able to record some car details, and these car details would be attached to activity nominations.  This was in place to assist leaders in arranging car pooling for activities.  In the new website incarnation, this feature was not present.

The good news is, we've just put them back better than ever!

What's Better?

Good question!  Here are a few features of the new Car Pooling Information system.

  • Members may now add more than one vehicle to their profile.
  • Adding a vehicle to a nomination is optional, and members may select which vehicle they wish to attach to their nomination.
  • Members may change which vehicle is attached to their nomination, or remove it, after they have nominated.
  • We've added a couple of extra fields - Make / Model, Colour, and a 4WD checkbox, to help provide extra detail about vehicles used to car pool.
  • The registration number field has been retained, but is optional.

Great!  How Do I Use It?

First, you need to add a vehicle to your profile.  When you visit your account edit page, you'll see a new section - Car Pooling Information.  This is where you can add vehicles.

Car Details Form

Once you save your vehicle, whenever you nominate for an activity you will see a dropdown selection box appear, prompting you to select the vehicle you wish to take.  You can either select your vehicle, or choose "No Vehicle" to opt to offer no vehicle for car pool.

Nominating with a Vehicle

When you nominate, the vehicle will appear in the row containing your nomination, in the Car Pooling column.

Nomination Listing with a Vehicle

After you nominate, you can change or remove the vehicle by clicking the "Change Vehicle" link below the vehicle details.  A popup containing a form will appear, allowing you to change or remove the vehicle.

Add or Change Vehicle

That's it!  Pretty easy.

For Leaders:  Car Pool Information in Printable Lists

We haven't forgotten leaders!  The printable PDFs for activity nomination lists also contain car pooling information.

If you have any questions about the Car Pool Information feature, feel free to get in contact via our contact page!

Hope you enjoy using the new feature.  Happy walking!

Brisbane Bushwalkers 1957 Red Centre Bus Tour

Posted by Shaun Johnston on Tuesday, 23rd of August, 2016

Barry Brook, grandson of Brisbane Bushwalkers members Bob and Joan Hart, has created a Facebook group to post a series of his grandparents' slides from the 1957 Brisbane Bushwalkers Red Centre Bus Tour, which was an epic 6,000 mile journey covering five states.

This is a great piece of club history.  For those interested, here is a link to the Facebook group, where you can see a number of photos that Barry has already posted:  Brisbane Bushwalkers 1957 Red Centre Bus Tour

As you can see, the new Brisbane Bushwalkers website has launched!

If you are a current member, you will need to reset your password.  To do this, simply visit the password reset page, and enter your username or your registration email.  Once you submit the form, a password reset email will be sent to you, with a single-use login link.  This link will log you in to the website, where you can immediately change your password.

Some new features you will find upon logging in are

  • Your member dashboard, which displays latest news, your upcoming activities, and activities that leaders have recently added
  • A proxy management area, for those who wish to be able to nominate other members, who may be family or friends, for activities.
  • A document area, where documents associated with Brisbane Bushwalkers may be viewed.

If you are a Leader, you will find a number of new features in the menu, and on nominee lists for activities you are leading.

If you find yourself having problems with the new website, please pop over to our support channel, and see if you can find a solution.  If you have a suggestion for an improvement or a new feature, you can also visit the support channel and post your suggestion in the forum.

Happy walking!
